Rishabh Pant and Rahul added to India’s record of centuries, bringing the total to five in the Headingley Test.
Rishabh Pant became the second wicketkeeper to score centuries in both innings of a Test match, achieving 118 against England on the fourth day after making 134 in the first innings. The first was former Zimbabwe wicketkeeper Andy Flower, who scored 141 and an unbeaten 199 against South Africa in Harare in 2001.
Rishabh Pant Records
Pant is the first Indian batsman to hit hundreds in both innings of a Test match in England. He joins the ranks of only eight other visiting batsmen to accomplish this feat, being the first since Steven Smith did so in 2019.
India recorded five hundreds in the Headingley Test, with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Pant scoring in the first innings, and KL Rahul and Pant contributing in the second. This marks the first instance of India accumulating five centuries in a Test match.
It has occurred five times before, with Australia being the only team to have recorded five hundreds in an away Test, achieving this feat in Jamaica in 1955.
Pant scored a combined total of 252 runs in both innings at Headingley, the highest by an Indian wicketkeeper in a Test match, breaking Budhi Kunderan’s record of 230 against England in Chennai in 1964. Pant’s 252 runs are also the fourth-highest for any wicketkeeper in a Test match; the top three are all by Flower.
Pant has eight Test centuries to his name. Only Adam Gilchrist from Australia (17) and Flower (12) have more Test hundreds as wicketkeepers, while England’s Les Ames also has eight.
Rahul has made three hundreds in England, the highest by an Indian opener in Test matches there. He surpasses Vijay Merchant, Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, and Rahul Dravid, who all have two each.
Pant has four Test hundreds in England, the most for any wicketkeeper, alongside Alec Stewart and Matt Prior. His four Test scores in England are the highest for any visiting wicketkeeper in the country.
Pant hit nine sixes at Headingley, tying for the most by any batsman in a Test match in England. Andrew Flintoff and Ben Stokes also achieved nine sixes against Australia in Birmingham in 2005 and at Lord’s in 2023, respectively.
